The electrochemical behaviour of copper in sea water has been studied at 25 °C as a function of the contribution of dissolved oxygen, of the fluidodynamic conditions, of the Cl- ions concentration. The results of the measurements of stationary corrosion potential, of anodic and cathodic potentiodynamic polarizations, of the "polarization resistance" (Rp), are discussed. A critical analysis of the reliability and reproductivity of the Rp data is presented. The oxygen seems to act more as a cathodic depolarizer than as a passivating agent. The fluidodynamic conditions influence the dissolution rate. The electrochemical behaviour of copper in synthetic sea water is very similar to the one presented in NaCl solution of the same concentration.
