The micrographic and X-ray examination of the richest tin part of the rare earths-tin systems showed the existence, from La to Lu, of a stable phase corresponding to the MX3 composition, while for the following elements (including Y) a phase with the formula MSn2 becomes stable. Eu and Yb behave differently, because of their divalency. The structure has been determined, from GdSn2 to LuSn, by single crystal X-ray analyses, finding the orthorhombic ZrSi2 type. For the first r.e. (La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm) this phase appears not to be stable and for the system Ce-Sn the composition Ce3Sn7 and Ce2Sn5 have been found as homogeneous ones. Lattice constant values are reported with a discussion of the existence range and structure type for the MX2 compounds of the r.e. with Si, Ge, Sn.
