Eleven new rare earth intermetallic compounds with Sn of Mg5Sn3composition have been found from metallographic and X-ray analyses. Eu and Yb behave differently and Ce also: the M5X3 phase appears not to be stable for these three metals. Their structure type is that of Mn5Si3 and the packing sequence is briefly described. Lattice constant values plotted vs. rare earth trivalent ionic radius show a linear decrease from La to Lu.
