Solution of a model kinetic equation for the electron distribution function in gas has resulted in a method for an efficient description of the optical breakdown in hydrodynamic computer simulation. The characteristics of an avalanche ionisation regime are first under study and the transition to a regime with a Maxwell distribution function is followed as a number of electrons increases.
