Exploring Felix Klein's contested modernism

Herbert Mehrtens had pursued an opposition between David Hilbert and Felix Klein as modern vs countermodern. Scholars such as Epple, Grattan-Guinness, Gray, Quinn, Rowe, and recently Siegmund-Schultze have voiced a range of opinions about Mehrtens’ ideas. We present an analysis of contrasting perspectives on Klein’s contested modernism, and argue that Mehrtens was looking for countermoderns at the wrong address.
