Constantin Carathéodory and his vision to establish the University of Smyrna – Light from the East

Résumé

C. Carathéodory following the vision of the great Greek statesman Eleftherios Venizelos, in 1919 abandoned his chair in Berlin’s university and undertook to organize the university of Smyrna, which could have functioned as a cultural bridge between East and West, as a buckle which could join Europe with Asia and Africa. However this institution never opened its gates as the Asia Minor disaster in September 1922 put an end to this ambitious plan having as main target with its School of Ethnology to melt the religious, cultural and linguistic diversity of the population living in these areas, although the official language for this university was the Greek.
