We present an episodic history of the staircased iteration diagram, nowadays applied as an entry-level tool for introducing discrete dynamical systems. Designed by Adrien-Marie Legendre in 1822 to support his research on the numerical approximation of roots of monotone functions in one real variable, the diagram attracted the attention of Fourier first and later of Galois, who tied it definitely to the theory of iteration. During the same century, the principles of this tool were the subject of thorough exploration and further reworking.
