A theory of the stability of thin-walled beams is formulated, capable of solving both the divergence and the bifurcation of the equilibrium. The differential equations are written in terms of the symmetry of the cross section. The mode of integration is indicated, the existing solutions are discussed and the calculation procedure is specified. One gives indications for the checking of the local stability.
