Firstly, we give a brief introduction into the representation theory of the covering groups of the symmetric groups, along with its combinatorics, that corresponds to the time up to 1986. This will be incomplete in many respects, e.g., there will be little included about symmetric functions or Clifford algebras. It will focus on those results that are needed later on. In the main part of the paper we report on the more recent results in p-modular representation theory of the covering groups. The following versions are available:
