It is not my purpose to convince the reader that the theory of matroids is an important theory, but rather that it concerns collections of ideals of partially ordered sets and that, therefore, it is natural to develop the theory of matroids on partially ordered sets.

The main part of the results of this paper have appeared in the article "On the solutions of a matrix equation," Boll. Un. Mat. Ital. 3-A (1989), 137-145.
