Let R[x1,x2,...,xn] be the ring of polynomials in the variables x1, x2, ..., xn over the ring R We describe an algorithm which computes the expansion of an arbitrary such polynomial in terms of monomials "in a staircase" with coefficients being symmetric polynomials.
