This text provides a survey of the known properties of a class of codes for which we coined the name "circular". Essentially, it is a class of codes which allow a unique decoding in terms of circular words.

The paper has finally become Chapter VII of the book "Theory of Codes" [Academic Press, Orlando, Fla., 1985] by the authors.
