This contribution provides a historical analysis of both the life and the work of János Bolyai. It mainly focuses upon his scientific relationships with his father Farkas and Gauss. The content of some sections of the Appendix, namely those concluding sections that are devoted to the squaring of the circle, is analyzed. In this context, a critical examination of some widespread historiographical theses is offered alongside with a reassessment of the role of Gauss in the process leading to the discovery of non-Euclidean geometries.
