This article is a detailed reconstruction of the episodes that accompanied the birth and the first steps of Galois spaces. These are projective spaces built on finite fields, and represent an important common ingredient used in Combinatorics, as well as in other fields like Graph Theory, Coding Theory, Combinatorial Group Theory and Design Theory. We name the protagonists of this story and identify some of the most important moments in the short history of Galois spaces, and more generally of Combinatorics, up to the present days. The mathematician who inaugurated these spaces with a finite number of points was Italian. His namewas Gino Fano (1871-1952).
