Leonardo da Vinci's studies on the squaring of surfaces, evidenced by many geometric drawings collected in the Codex Atlanticus, are certainly less known than his paintings and his technological machines. Howeverhis geometrical approach, purely intuitive and unconstrained by formalisms, has inspired various activities. The theoretical framework of this research in mathematics teaching is aimed at motivating individual discovery, favoring the enhancement of geometric perceptive-sensory capacities. This is achieved by making drawings and using specifically designed materials. In this way the learning modalities of the pre-adolescent pupils are supported, according to the recent contributions of the neurosciences. Furthermore, the process that allows us to arrive to more abstract aspects starting from the study of particular cases is decisive for the formation of a primitive but rigorous rational thought.
