We analyse here Leonardo's work which is strongly imaginative, ingenuous and intuitive. Leonardo's thinking, which is also very interesting for the related pedagogy, is based upon the `logic of images' as expression of some very important mathematical ideas: firstly prospective drawing but also some problems inherited from the Greek mathematicians such as squaring the circle and duplicating the cube which Leonardo didn't believe were impossible to solve. Leonardo's work also includes nods to eclipses and parabolas, mathematical objects that were used by painters in the 1400s to represent the foreshortening of a circle. These ideas emerge in the west as weak echoes of the great scientific achievements of Arabic science of 5 centuries before.
