After becoming Privatdozent at Halle, where he habilitated in 1869 with a thesis on number theory, Cantor gave his research a new direction. Under Heine's influence, in a bunch of papers following each other in quick succession he tackled the problem of uniqueness of the representation of a function in trigonometric series, a matter of renewed interest due to the (posthumous, in 1868) publication of Riemann's Habilitationsschrift (1854). In those papers one can find the germ of the theory of sets that Cantor worked out in the following decade.
