The theory of linear operators with singular potentials has acquired a well-defined and consolidatedr ole within the Mathematical Methods for Quantum Mechanics. In this theory the Dirac's distribution plays animportant role. With this article we try to identify the genesis of this line of research and, more specifically,recognize the important contribution given by the Italian scientist Enrico Fermi.
