In the framework of the so-called Landscape Ecology and of the studies on the ecological stability of an environmental system a review of various mathematical models is presented. These models have shown to be useful to represent and evaluate the time transformations of a certain territory under investigation. At this end in the last part of the paper an example of the evolution of the ecological state of a system in the metropolitan area of the city of Torino is shown. Perspectives of new models and final remarks conclude the paper.
