The article deals with several mathematical problems on finding local maxima or minima by a French lawyer and mathematician Pierre de Fermat. Fermat’s original solving methods without the use of differential calculus are described. Fermat’s contribution to physics (Fermat’s principle of least time) is briefly mentioned. The article also presents Fermat’s biographical data.
