Measuring the distance between two points is a fundamental issue not only for mathematicians and physicists, but for geographers as well. However, measuring the distances on the surface of the Earth is special, as the particular points can be very distant. On the other hand, a geographer has the opportunity to determine the distance between two points by direct measurement or to use one of the methods of imaging the surface of the Earth on maps.
