At the end of the 19th century, it was possible to start research on the conduction of electricity through gases at low pressure. Besides other things, the research demonstrated the existence of the electron and determined its fundamental properties. The experiments of this groundbreaking research were carried out by English physicist Joseph John Thomson (1856–1940). The article describes his experiments leading to the discovery of the electron.
