The paper reports experimental data on the survival of neuronal cultures from mouse hippocampus, following exposure to the excitatory amino acids (L-Glu and L-Asp). The results obtained with quantitative estimates of neuronal density, with morphological observations and with immunohistochemical staining (for neuron specific enolase) indicate a toxic effect of excitatory amino acids, which is more severe on neurons with a higher density of specific receptors. Moreover the data show that neuronal damage is reduced in the presence of the antagonist Kynureic acid, and enhanced in the presence of glycine, an allosteric activator of the receptor.
