We investigated the effects of IFN-$\gamma$ or IFN-$\alpha$ on virus yield. 2'-5' Oligoadenylate Synthetase activation and induction of Class I hystocompatibility antigens in T lymphocytes. Vesicular stomatitis virus replication was not impaired in T cells by a treatment with IFN-$\gamma$, whereas it was completely inhibited by the addition of IFN-$\alpha$. In contrast a B cell line and fibroblats were fully protected by all the IFNs. Analysis of the IFN-induced enzyme 2'-5' Oligoadenylate Synthetase, revealed that it was induced in T lymphocytes only by IFN-$\alpha$ but not following an IFN-$\gamma$ treatment. Moreover, both IFN-$\alpha$ and IFN-$\gamma$ were able to increase the Class I antigens expression of the T cell lines tested, although the molecular mechanisms leading to this augmentation seem to be different for IFN-$\gamma$ and IFN-$\alpha$. The increase of Class I expression by IFN-$\alpha$ is indeed due to a transciptional activation of the H2 genes, whereas IFN-$\gamma$ increases H-2 expression of T lymphocytes without stimulation of transcription. Taken as a whole these results suggest that on T lymphocytes IFN-$\gamma$ exerts activities different from those activated in other cell types or from those activated in T lymphocytes by IFN-$\alpha$ and -$\gamma$.
