We analyse the maximum shear stress (MSS) in an earth model formed with two layers and a core subject to body forces and surface tractions with threedimensional nature. We find that when the surface traction and their isostatic body forces act on a narrow band in latitude and are described by peaks at regular distances, the MSS has a maximum in the superficial layer. By reducing the spacing between the peaks the maximum of the MSS moves toward the surface of the sphere. The geophysical implication is that, the seismicity, under narrow mountain ranges, if caused by the topographic load, should be close to the surface of the brittle part of crust as is observed in many instances. We simulate a model of the Apennines and find that the maximum of the MSS is at a depth of about 9 Km which coincides with the depth of the maximum concentration of earthquakes in that region.
