Xenopus laevis embryos were subjected to heat shock for one hour, at different temperatures, at different developmental stages, from cleavage to late neurula. After the treatment all the embryos were recovered at the normal developmental temperature. The total proteins extracted from whole embryos were analyzed by polyaerylamide gel electrophoresis. Some embryos of all batches were allowed to develop for 2 or 3 days and used for histological analysis. The results indicate that the heat shock at 28°C is the most efficient in inducing morphologic abnormalities and changes in protein patterns. The morphologic abnormalities were principally due to an inhibition of development of the eyes, irregular arrangement of myoblasts or absence of intersomitic boundaries; inhibition of pigmented cells distribution. Coomassie blue stained protein patterns of the embryos exposed to heat shock, showed increased synthesis of a protein of molecular weight of 100 kDa and of a protein of 30 kDa. When heat shock was delivered to embryos with actinomycin in the culture medium, no protein synthesis increase occurred.
