The distribution and displacement of a coastal Amphipod (Talorchestia martensii Weber) has been studied on a Somalian coast by means of glycol pit-fall traps. Abundant in the eu- and supra-littoral, sporadic in the extralittoral, this crustacean is chiefly but not exclusively active on the surface at night. Its displacements follow a complex rhythm with dual components: diurnal (descent after sunset, ascent before dawn) and tidal (descent after and ascent before high tide). The tidal migrations during the day are much more reduced. At night diurnal and tidal migrations nearly coincide for about 10 days around the spring tides, separating for a few days around the neap tides. A locomotor pattern with dual components (diurnal and tidal) persists for a few days in constant non-tidal conditions.
