The possibility of preventing damage caused to limb bones and neurons in the medulla and spinal cord of chick embryo by administration of $\beta-\beta^{\prime}$ iminodipropionitrile (IDPN) was investigated using D-L Ethionine the protective effect of which was already known for mammals. D-L Ethionine, when administered in conjunction with IDPN, appeared to be very toxic to the embryo and the newly hatched chick and to have no preventing effect. A possible mechanism for this effect in the chick as compared to mammals, is discussed.
