The longitudinal muscles of abdominal gill bearing segments of nymphal Ecdyonurus helveticus and Baëtis rhodani (Ephemeroptera) have been studied electron microscopically. Cross micrograph of the A-band shows the same pattern as that of an insect fast-acting muscle: thick filaments are hexagonally packed, each is surrounded by 6 thin filaments which are located between two thick ones, thus with a ratio between thick and thin filaments of 1 : 3. The regular lattice of the Z—line and flattened orientated filaments of the H region are described. Regular arrangements on these fast-acting muscles are compared with similar types of muscle filament patterns and related to quick gill movements.
