The lymphopoiesis in the thymus of differently irradiated mice was studied: one group of animals was irradiated in the whole body, and the other group received the same X-ray dose (450 r) but had both the hind limbs lead-shielded. Differences were noted during both the degenerative and restitutional phase of the irradiated thymuses, as well as a different percentage of pycnotic lymphocytes. A migration of lymphocytes from the bone marrow to the thymus was suggested, since lymphocytes at different mitotic stages, as soon as 24 h after irradiation, were observed in the cortical region of the thymus.
