A detailed spectrophotometric investigation of the reaction between [IrCl6]3- or [IrCl6]2- and tin(II)chloride in hydrochloric solutions over a wide range of the concentrations of SnCl2 and HCl, shows occurrence of complex equilibria among at least three species of compounds containing iridium-tin bonds, whose existence ranges are delimited. Isolation and characterization of solid products containing the mononuclear anion [IrIIICl2(SnCl3)4]3- with iridium-tin bonds are described. The differences in behaviour between rhodium and iridium in the investigated reaction and the possibility of formation of mononuclear and binuclear Rh-Sn and Ir-Sn complexes are discussed.
