Bacillus rossius reproduces by parthenogenesis in most of Southern France and Liguria, and by amphigony in the rest of the distribution area. All females are, however, always able to reproduce by either method. Parthenogenesis is thelytokous, but fertile males do sometimes hatch from unfertilized eggs. This explains the cases of spanandry reported from Southern France and the return to amphigony from parthenogenesis in some populations of Bouches-du-Rhone. On the other hand, the cases of spanandry observed in bisexual populations are almost certainly due to the fortuitous isolation of one or more females. Such an occurrence is by no means rare among Bacillus rossius. The high yield of parthenogenesis in bisexual populations must thus be regarded as an adaptation which permits the species to survive the risks involved in isolation during the reproductive season.
