Frog's olfactory mucosa has been observed with the electron microscope. Ultrastructure of olfactory neurons has been described and several organelles recognized.The rods of the olfactory receptors bear cilia with the characteristic 9 + 2 pattern of filaments. Supporting cell's do not bear cilia but show an irregular series of microvilli. The supporting cell's show in their cytoplasm a complex arrangement of organelles and their role is likely to be more complex than their name implies. Secretory phenomena, for instance, can be observed. Ultrastructural characteristics of these elements have been compared with the ultrastructure of epithelial cells in the respiratory area.
