A method is described to measure the maximal anaerobic power in man, as due to the phosphagen breakdown only (alactacid process). This consists in running up a stair at top speed, and by measuring the vertical component of the speed between the second and the fourth secs, when the maximum speed is reached: this value gives also the mechanical power in kgm/kg sec. The power as measured in energy consumption can be obtained by dividing this figure by 0,25, the efficiency value for this type of exercise. The maximal anaerobic power amounts to about 3 times the aerobic power, averaging inyoung fit subjects 1.6 kgm/kg sec (ca. 1.5 HP for a 70 kg man), or ca. 50 kcal/kg h if expressed in energy consumption. A mechanical power as high as 2.8 kgm/kg sec (ca. 2.6 HP) has been found in a sprinter.
