The scientific contributions of G. L. Lagrange to algebra and number theory are concentrated in the first decade of the period he spent in Berlin (i.e., until 1775). In this article we devote special attention to Lagrange's fundamental contributions to solution of algebraic equations, to the theory of continued fractions, to the arithmetic theory of binary quadratic forms and to solution of Diophantine equations of second degree in two unknowns.
