. La produzione scientifica di G. L. Lagrange nel campo dell'algebra e della teoria dei numeri è concentrata nel primo decennio del periodo da lui trascorso a Berlino (fino al 1775). In questo articolo si esaminano in particolare i fondamentali contributi di Lagrange alla risoluzione delle equazioni algebriche, alla teoria delle frazioni continue, alla teoria aritmetica delle forme quadratiche binarie e alla risoluzione di equazioni diofantee di secondo grado in due incognite.
The scientific contributions of G. L. Lagrange to algebra and number theory are concentrated in the first decade of the period he spent in Berlin (i.e., until 1775). In this article we devote special attention to Lagrange's fundamental contributions to solution of algebraic equations, to the theory of continued fractions, to the arithmetic theory of binary quadratic forms and to solution of Diophantine equations of second degree in two unknowns.
