This work traces the career of Emma Castelnuovo, highlighting her commitment to the training of a new generation of teachers of mathematics. This training focused on one hand on a ``de-provincialization'' of Italian teaching through a comparison of what was happening internationally, and on the other hand on active learning through internships, study and experimentation. The present reconstruction is based on articles and books by Emma, on the many interviews that she gave which also led to extensive biographies that can be found on Internet and the stories of people who worked with her.
