Cet article examine l'antiréalisme de Mach et les raisons pour lesquelles il s'est opposé à l'espace absolu et aux atomes. Si l'opposition de Mach à tout usage et à toute interprétation réaliste du concept d'espace absolu était radicale, son attitude vis-à-vis du concept d'atome était plus nuancée. Bien que Mach ait été franchement hostile au réalisme métaphysique et à toute interprétation ontologique forte de l'existence des atomes, il admettait l'utilisation de modèles atomistes, même s'il était convaincu que le programme atomiste, inspiré du mécanicisme, avait cessé d'être fécond. De plus, certains concepts théoriques - y compris, dans certaines circonstances, celui d'atome - peuvent, au même titre que les concepts des objets ordinaires, légitimement recevoir une interprétation réaliste, prise en un sens faible.

Abstract

This paper examines Mach's antirealism and the reasons why he opposed absolute space and the atoms. Mach's opposition to any use and realist interpretation of the concept of absolute space was radical; but his attitude with respect to the concept of atom was more balanced. Although Mach was clearly hostile to all forms of metaphysical realism and all strong ontological interpretations of the concept of atom, he was not opposed to the use of atomist models even if he was convinced that the atomist program, inspired from mechanicism, was heuristically exhausted. Moreover, some theoretical concepts - including, in some circumstances, the concept of atom - as well as the concepts of ordinary objects, may be realistically interpreted, albeit in a weak sense.
