La passe de l'espérance. L'émergence d'une mathématique du probable au XVIIème siècle

L'article tente d'évoquer le réseau des conditions qui, sur le terreau du scepticisme constructif, permettent l'émergence, dans la deuxième moitié du XVIIème siècle d'une mathématique du probable qui offre les éléments théoriques d'une nouvelle prudence ; il confronte cette émergence aux traces que nous possédons actuellement d'une quantification du probable au XIVème siècle. Le concept central de cette mathématisation est la valeur de l'espérance d'une situation de risque dont le modèle fondamental est celui du pari dans les jeux de hasard. On peut alors comprendre comment Jacques Bernoulli élabore, au sein du projet d'une logique générale du probable, les prémices d'une mathématique du probable issue de la problématique de l'estimation des probabilités.

Abstract

This article attempts to set out the network of conditions which, on the mould of constructive scepticism, allow the emergence, in the second half of the XVIIth century, of mathematics of the probable giving the theoretical elements of a new prudence ; he confronts this emergence with the traces that we have at present of a quantification of the probable in the XIVth century. The focal concept of this mathematization is the expectation value in a risk situation whose fundamental model is that of wager in games of chance. We are thus led to understand how James Bernoulli elaborates, in the project of a general logic of the probable, the first fruits of mathematics of the probable coming from the problem of the estimation of probabilities.
