The article contains a survey of the present state-of-the-art of multidimensional calculus of variations which is of great theoretic and practical value. The presentation is grouped around the solution of the famous Bernstein problem on minimal hyper surfaces, and precisely for spaces of such dimension maximal hypersurfaces are hyperplanes. A description is given of the applicable methods of investigation.
