The paper is a short survey of results obtained mainly by S. B. Stechkin and S. I. Zukhovitsky in Chebyshev's problem on best approximation by means of polynomials generated by elements of a finite system of vector functions continuous on a compact set. The paper is dedicated to the memory of S. B. Stechkin.
