Traces of infinite-dimensional optimization can be sourced to ancient Greek mathematics. According to a legend the knowledge about the solution of such kind of problems helped on the foundation of Carthage, and today's new subfields of infinite-dimensional optimization such as optimal control, shape or topology optimization are indispensable in propelling present and future technological developments.
