We try to give an account of the contributions of Italian authors to the relativistic theories, on the experimental as well as on the theoretical ground. The stress will fall, in particular, on those due to the Italian mathematical school of Ricci Curbastro and Levi Civita – to mention here just the names of the authors who gave the most relevant contributions – who, before General Relativity was developed as a physical theory, had already created most of its mathematical instruments. Attention is also payed to more recent events, up to the present days, inasmuch as both Special and General Relativity have developed into fields of investigation in continuous evolution, to which Italian authors have given, and continue to give, important contributions.
