In 2002 the EMS started a European competition for the best article on a topic related with mathematics for newspapers and magazines readers. On the occasion of the publication of the winning article the author reflects on the role of the different media in the diffusion of mathematical knowledge pointing out the essential role of the connections between mathematics and culture.
