Les quaternions et le mouvement du solide autour d'un point fixe chez Hamilton

L'article analyse, à partir notamment du mémoire On quaternions and the rotation of a solid body communiqué en 1848, plusieurs concepts algébriques (endomorphisme, conjugaison, polynôme caractéristique) qui ont joué un rôle important dans la dernière période de la vie de Hamilton. En considérant l'exemple de la dualité, on cherche à montrer comment sa pratique mathématique se rattache à ses lectures et recherches optiques ou physiques des années 1830.

This paper investigates - in the light of his paper On quaternions and the rotation of a solid body, dating from 1848 - several algebraic concepts (endomorphism, conjugation, characteristic polynomial) that played a major role in the ultimate phase of Hamilton's work. Looking into the case of duality, it will be seen that this provides an opportunity of making apparent how his mathematical practices were linked to his readings and optical or physical investigations, harking back to the 1830s.
