Le texte que nous présentons est le dernier cours du mathématicien berlinois Leopold Kronecker (1823-1891). Ce cours, publié ici pour la première fois, nous donne des informations importantes sur la philosophie des mathématiques de Kronecker, en particulier sur sa conception du nombre. Il précise, en outre, la position que Kronecker occupa dans le mouvement d'‘arithmétisation' des mathématiques et permet de mieux comprendre comment, et pourquoi, il se situe à contre-courant de la tendance dominante (animée notamment par Weierstrass, Cantor et Dedekind). Kronecker définit le concept de nombre de façon purement mathématique et vise à intégrer l'algèbre et l'analyse dans une arithmétique telle qu' il l'entend. Certaines de ses positions apparaissent aujourd'hui comme des anticipations de principes constructivistes ou intuitionnistes du xxe.
The text published here is the last lecture course, on the notion of number in mathematics, taught by the Berlin mathematician Leopold Kronecker (1823-1891). These lectures, published here for the first time, give interesting insights into Kronecker's philosophy of mathematics and in particular into his concept of number. They clarify Kronecker's position within the movement of ‘arithmetization' and allow, in particular, for a better understanding of why and how Kronecker opposed the dominant viewpoint within this movement (held by Weierstrass, Cantor, Dedekind, and others). Kronecker introduced whole numbers mathematically, and proposed to integrate all of algebra and analysis into arithmetic. Today certain positions held by Kronecker may be seen as anticipating constructivist or intuitionist principles of the twentieth century.
