Feedback from artificial intelligence as a support for students in learning mathematics

Feedback provided to students during mathematics teaching should be of good quality. Artificial intelligence automatically creates detailed feedback on the students’ written solutions, which can be a great support for the student and teacher. The quality of this feedback is important for teaching outcomes. Qualitative studies have shown that the feedback provided by ChatGPT contains four elements, namely indicating what the student did well, indicating errors, explaining errors and tips for further work. The information provided by AI is of varying quality. ChatGPT 4.0 generates substantive errors in the feedback provided to the student and does not notice all the student’s errors, so it cannot be treated as an independent tool for providing automatic feedback. The quality of feedback regarding the analysis of the solution and the motivational function is good, so ChatGPT can be used by teachers as support in creating feedback for the student (the teacher must verify the correctness of the information).
