Fundamental Ideas of mathematics – An analysis of Polish textbooks from different periods

The mathematics didactic concept of Fundamental Ideas has been undergoing a gradual development for more than 60 years. It bundles aspects that reflect a valid picture of mathematics in the mathematics classroom. This concept is used in our study to analyse two Polish textbooks that were conceived during particularly significant periods in mathematics didactics. The periods in question are, on the one hand, the period of new math and, on the other, the period of competence orientation in mathematics teaching. In each case, the chapter on linear functions is analysed. The results show that in the period of new math, the range of anchored aspects of ideas is rather narrow and, at the same time, a focus on the content aspect of ideas is recognisable. In the textbook of the period of competence orientation in mathematics teaching, more diverse aspects of ideas, including non-cognitive aspects, are anchored and linked together. Aspects of ideas that thematise cultural-historical developments in mathematics are not taken into account in either period.
