The mathematical aptitudes of children with special educational needs. Diagnosis and forms of their development

The article presents the results of the first research conducted in Poland with an aim to estimate the number of children diagnosed with various degrees of disability, who have aptitudes of mathematical talent. At the beginning of the article the terminology related to disability is discussed, the current legal regulations concerning the education of children with disability diagnosis, but also the current state of knowledge regarding the aptitudes of mathematical talent in children. Next, the author presents the design of her research, including the tool for diagnosing the aptitudes of mathematical talent and the methods accompanying the determination of the research results. The main goal of the research was to determine whether among children diagnosed with disability there are some who manifest the aptitudes of mathematical talent. The study concerned 83 children from six educational facilities in Poland one year before attending school; among them, there were children with motor disabilities, visually and hearing-impaired ones as well as those with Asperger Syndrome, autism spectrum disorders, multiple disabilities, cerebral palsy and mild intellectual disabilities. The results of the research have shown that 27 out of 83 surveyed children diagnosed with mental disability have the aptitudes in mathematics, while 8 of them have the aptitudes of high mathematical abilities. These results indicate, however, that the mathematics education of children diagnosed with disability is not conducive to the development of mathematical talent. Corrective actions should start by introducing changes in the education of special educators in the field of real mental abilities of children diagnosed with mental disabilities.
