This study aims to showcase some benefits of applying mathematical modeling during the process of teaching mathematics for primary school students by the comparison of their abilities in solving tasks in a real-world context. The study was carried out in the Republic Srpska, one of the entities of Bosnia and Herzegovina and involved 70 students for an entire school year. We formed two experimental and two control groups and the experimental groups were taught through mathematical modeling-based lessons, while the control groups teaching remained in the usual or traditional format. The results of our study – both quantitative and qualitative – suggest that mathematical modeling-based lessons can become an effective educational method for teaching mathematical concepts in primary school. Particularly, it was shown that the experimental groups of students achieved convincingly better results on the test with real-world context tasks. Secondly, we note the advantages and the disadvantages of applying mathematical modeling-based lessons in the primary level of mathematical education.
