The transition in mathematics from primary to secondary education in Greece:The role of word problems

The teacher-student relationship, the discontinuity of the curricula and the lack of communication of the teachers of the two levels can affect the transition in mathematics between primary and lower secondary levels. In this article I initially summarise the current research findings on the transition in mathematics and propose a new research approach, regarding the Greek education system. This approach focuses on the role of word problems contained in the textbooks of grades 6 and 7. My preliminary analysis presented in this article focuses on the problems'solvability, linguistic complexity, mathematical complexity and context.
